POSITION TITLE: Music Director; Part-time (approximately 10 hours/week; negotiable)
JOB SUMMARY The Music Director serves as the principal musician or convener/coordinator of music for the church, planning and leading worship music in the Sunday morning service and otherwise as needed. Alongside punctuality, a heart for service, and skills in instrumentation, the individual should see themselves both as a teacher and student or co-laborer. He/she needs to be humble and culturally sensitive to the unique dynamics of the church’s mission, membership, and community. An ability to identify and nurture the gifts of members, including soloists, choirs, and those helping to lead worship in other ways is paramount. He/she needs to have a collegial, cooperative working relationship with the church staff and church itself.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Worship Planning: 5 hours
Select music for all worship services, in consultation with the Pastor as needed.
Get the Executive Administrator the necessary music information for Sunday services (i.e., for the PowerPoint slides and bulletin) at least three weekdays prior, typically by Wednesday.
Create worship slides each week and maintain music licensing agreements.
Support the Pastor in planning and leading worship that is spirited, joyful, and engaging, always lovingly encouraging congregational participation.
Lead and direct the praise team, band, and other worship volunteers with clear communication and a positive attitude.
Manage music ministry budgetary expenditures, with responsibility for choosing and purchasing the necessary music and music supplies.
Encourage and develop musical talent and gifts of those in the congregation.
Lead regular, weekly practice and preparation for Sunday’s worship service.
Recruit new volunteers for the music ministry and develop choirs as needed.
Worship Leadership: 5 hours
By example, in conjunction with the Pastor, staff, and volunteers, lead the musical components of the weekly worship service with passion, skill, and humility in the spirit of Christian service.
Display committed excellence in appreciating a diverse array of music and modes of worship.
Ideally, exhibit strong vocal skills and/or the ability to play a musical instrument, preferably the drums, piano, or both.
Ensure that the music ministry’s needs are covered by rehearsed, capable volunteers when away. When emergencies occur that may inhibit this, communicate as soon as possible with the Pastor and other impacted staff and volunteers.
Meet regularly with the Pastor as determined.
Provide music for special services (i.e., Holy Week, worship outdoors, funerals and weddings) when possible.
